blacktop 360 party grillIs there anything more important for a tailgating party (other than the people you are with and the game you are about to enjoy) than having the right grill?  When I think of picking out the right grill for tailgating I primarily think of two things:  I want the food to taste great and I want it to a be smooth process (setting up, cooking and cleaning).

One blogger than I came across in my research mentioned four features to look at when choosing the best portable gas grill for tailgating:  portability, fuel type, size of the grill and hitch mounting.  This last one is not a must but it is a pretty nice feature to have for your portable grill if your budget allows for it.

In my last blog post I talked about the best portable gas grill for camping.  I discussed how I did my research and what criteria I used in picking the best one.  In the end I had one main recommended grill.

In this post I want to suggest a few (rather than just one) for you to pick from.    The reason I didn’t just pick one for this post is because there are a few factors that will affect your choice more perhaps than the other type of grill.  The amount of people you are cooking for at the tailgating party, your budget and what other uses you plan to have for your grill  are factors that will determine what is best for you.  I’ve spent several hours in research looking at  a variety of websites from retailers, to actual users, bloggers and even wikipedia to come up with my conclusions.  So based on that research here are the best portable gas grills for tailgating:

Coleman Road Trip Grill Customer ReviewsColeman 9949-750 Road Trip Grill LXE.  If you’ve read my other post on best camping grills you might be thinking I am biased towards this grill (and I may be since I own one and love it) but it is the most popular grill right now at Amazon for tailgating grills.  And I wouldn’t just recommend it based on this factor.  As usual, I only consider products that have four stars or more (which this one does).  This grill allows for numerous things:  its portable and easy to setup (with its wheels and scissor legs it is very easy to setup), you can do indirect heating since it has two burners, it is very well priced, lights with one click and gets really hot if you need it two.  If you want to learn more about this grill including some of the cons you can read my complete review of this grill here.

weber go anywhere gas grillWeber 1520 Propane Gas Go-Anywhere Grill.  Probably the main two advantages of this grill are how easily you can move it around and the fact that it is very economical.  This is a simple grill and yet it is still a Weber (which to me is the best brand even though I love my Coleman).  If this size is good enough for you and you are looking for something economical (under $70) and portable I would consider this one.  If you want to read what reviewer’s have said about their experience with this grill you can go here.  Just a little tip on reading reviews at Amazon.  There are two ways that you can have Amazon sort the reviews.  One is in the order of the most helpful ones first, the other is in the order of the newer ones first.  By default Amazon will take you to the first one but you can change it to order the newer ones first  which I find more helpful since sometimes products will change over time.  I like to read what people are saying about the product today not four years ago.

Margaritaville G1000 Ride-Behind Tailgating Propane Grill.  If you’re budget allows for it and you really like the idea of having your grill attach to the back of your vehicle this is a great pick.  Right now on Amazon it has a 4.8 stars average of its reviewers which is really high.  The main two negatives I see with it are its cost and the fact that it is hard to get because many places that sell it are out of stock.  At the time of writing this Amazon still has it but they are running out soon.

blacktop 360 party grillBlacktop 360 HFI Premium Party Hub Grill/Fryer, Black/Blue.  Ok… I almost didn’t mention this one and here’s why: I don’t normally recommend products that don’t have enough reviews.  Right now this one only has two reviews so its hard to assess how good it really is.  But you can check it out for yourself.  I mentioned this grill because of some of the unique features that can make this grill potentially a great “party grill” with its deep fryer, grill, griddle, warming plate and 452 square inches of cooking space.  I had to at least mention it to you with the caution that enough people have not reviewed it yet.

Weber Q 320 Portable Outdoor Gas Grill Review

Weber Q Series.  You probably can never go wrong with a Weber.  Depending on your budget and your preferences you have a few options to pick from.  I have reviewed the Weber Q 320 Portable Gas Grill.  But there are some economical options as well in the Weber Q series that you can check out at Amazon and read both the description and the reviews.

What about charcoal grills for tailgating?

Personally I wouldn’t recommend this option.  Why?  To me its not worth the hassle at this type of event even though I love the way meat tastes cooked over charcoal.  There are enough great gas grills that taste great and  like I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I have two main things I would want for tailgate grilling:  simplicity and great tasting food.  But that’s just me.

weber smokey grillIf you really want to go this route because you are committed to charcoal cooking no matter what and/or you don’t really want to spend the extra for a gas grill, I would recommend (based on being a best-seller charcoal grill for tailgating and based on comments on some forums) the Weber 10020 Smokey Joe Silver Charcoal Grill, Black.  It is very economical and its a great grill for this type of event.  Just make sure that it will suit your needs when it comes to the amount of people you are cooking for or since it is under $50 you can buy a couple of these.

If you want to compare some more (I know some of you like to do extensive research before deciding) I have a post on the best portable gas grills.  In it there is a chart with the top five grills and the key features I looked for in comparing these.  Happy tailgating!

So you’re going camping and you want to have the perfect grill.  What is the best portable gas grill for camping?  I want to emphasize that I am especially talking about a portable gas grill in this post.  Now, I’ve read a few camping forums and some seem to feel that using a gas grill on your camping trip doesn’t seem to fit with real camping.  And that’s fine if you feel that way.  Hey, I grew up in Argentina and we do a lot of charcoal grilling (the best in the world) and if a “gaucho” saw my gas grill he would probably laugh.  But you gotta love how practical a gas grill can be at times.  And some cook really well I might add…

So here’s a couple of reasons you might want to have both types of grills for camping.  Sometimes charcoal grilling is banned (in Texas state parks at times it is, especially when there is a drought).  And secondly if the weather is not favorable it is handy to have a portable gas grill.  BTW, if you are looking at getting a charcoal grill I have reviewed the Weber 751001 22.5-Inch One-Touch Gold Charcoal Grill.  Feel free to check it out if you are inclined towards a charcoal portable grill.

Let me also state the obvious by pointing out that there is a difference between a portable camping stove or oven and a portable grill.  Here I am writing specifically about what I consider to be the best portable grill.  There are some great camping stoves that are worth looking into.  However, with the grill that I will recommend, you don’t have to worry about getting both (unless you need to cook for a really large crowd) because you will be able to use use it both as a grill and for other things such as cooking bacon and pancakes.

Coleman Road Trip Grill Customer ReviewsYou can use a portable gas grill for cooking those juicy burgers at night as you gaze at the beautiful starry night.  If you love to grill vegetables there are some really tasty options and recipes.  However, I don’t think most people think about using their camping grill for all three meals (ie you won’t be cooking bacon on a grill).  Ok… so this brings me to why I think the Coleman Road Trip is the best option when choosing a portable gas grill for camping.

Now Weber in my opinion has some of the best gas grills available.  I would normally recommend a Weber because they are of such outstanding quality.  However, considering all of the factors I have to recommend this grill over some of the great options that Weber has to offer when it comes to portable gas grills.  If you’re main reason for buying this grill is for camping here’s why I would go with this one:

coleman 9949-750 road trip grill lxe review

Coleman 9949-750 Road Trip Grill Lxe

-  I always pick a product that has at least four stars on Amazon (and more than 20 reviewers).  The Coleman Road Trip Grill definitely meets that standard.

-What I love about this grill is how it can stand on its own or collapse.  To me this is very convenient for travel.  Its wheels make it easy to move around.

-  This grill gets hot, really hot.  You don’t have to worry about it being too cold or windy.

- With the two accessories that you can add to this grill, you can cook all of your meals on this grill.  You can add a cast iron griddle and a stove grate if you wanted to.  You now have a camping stove as well as an awesome grill.  There are a couple of reviewers of this grill that commented on how they make breakfast consistently on this grill using the cast iron griddle.  The ability to interchange these accessories is probably its greatest selling point when considering a portable gas grill for camping.

There are some advantages of the Weber grills over this one if you are looking at what gas grill you should purchase for both your backyard and camping that you may want to look into.  I have a reviewed  a few Weber grills like the Weber Q 320 portable gas grill which is really superior if you are able to stretch the budget for it and want it for more than just camping.

However, I still think that the Coleman grill is a better choice for your camping experience because of its portability, its two 10,000 BTU burners and its interchangeable accessories that allow you for a more versatile outdoor cooking experience.

I have also reviewed the Coleman Road Trip Gas Grill if you want to check it out.

portable gas grillsHere´s what I did in my research:  I read portable gas grill reviews on Amazon for some of the most popular, best-selling portable gas grills.  I then read some of the product manuals for these gas grills.  I wanted to get a good feel (though I had done some pretty extensive research previously for some other posts on my site and for my own purchase) of the features available.  I also paid attention to what criteria reviewers were looking for in picking the right grill.

Next, I checked some other sites that sold gas grills to compare (in my experience Amazon almost always has the best deal) but I wanted to see if there were other grills that I hadn´t found on Amazon to get a feel for what people were saying about these.  I ended up with a list of about fifteen or so grills and I narrowed a list of the top five criteria for picking a portable gas grill.  I chose these five features or criteria based on what reviewers were saying and based on my own experience.

The five features that I came up with were as follows:  Price, Portability (light weight, easy to transport), durability (sturdy, quality brand), performance and functionality (does it get hot enough, can you sear, heat distribution, cleaning and maintenance, and can it stand on its own), cooking capacity.  I went back to my list of fifteen grills and narrowed it down to five mainly based on which received the highest star rating but also based on the five criteria that I determined to be best in picking the top 5 portable gas grills.

So here you have it:  the top 5 portable gas grills for 2012.  I hope this post (specifically the chart above) helps you to narrow down your choices when it comes to the best portable gas grills for 2012.  Below is the chart to help guide you in your decision.  I have placed them in what I consider to be the order of preference if I were making the decision.  For practical purposes I have chosen the shorter name of the model.

Weber 751001 22.5-Inch One-Touch Gold Charcoal Grill Review

Weber 22.5 inch one-touch Gold Kettle Grill

This review on the Weber 751001 22.5-Inch One-Touch Gold Charcoal Grill was one that I came by accident. This site is a review of gas grills. I pick the most popular gas grills on Amazon on do reviews on them. Amazon actually by mistake showed this grill under gas grills. However, I decided to include it because I have a gas grill and it is awesome because of its ease of use compared to a charcoal grill. If you have the opportunity to have both (this one is pretty inexpensive) you have a choice for both options. Its nice at time to go back to the good old fashioned way of cooking. So, here is a review of what’s probably the best portable charcoal grill.

So if are you tired of your old gas grill that won’t cook your steak exactly the way you want it to? Then maybe you are looking for a charcoal grill. Not just any charcoal grill but the best among them. The best among them can produce that traditional, homey and smokey flavor that will cook your steak just right and, therefore, the ultimate companion of BBQ lovers.

I am talking about the Weber 751001 22.5-Inch One-Touch Gold Charcoal Grill. This Weber is a definite worthy buy for those who want a classic product but with wonderful extras. It has a sleek design and, as mentioned, produces delicious results. What’s more, the lid and bowl are porcelain-enameled and heavy gauged, the legs are made from aluminum and are resistant to rust, it has a removable ash catcher, easy to clean and has a large cooking grate.

Weber Genesis S-330 Gas Grill ReviewWeber Genesis S-330 Gas Grill Review

So far in my previous posts I have written gas grill reviews that fit in the “under $500” category (some under $200), with the weber genesis s-330, I am entering into a whole new category of gas grill reviews (and price for that matter). This grill is built to last. As more than one customer put it, the weber genesis s-330 is built like a tank. With its three stainless steel burners (controlled separately), its new sear station, its additional side burner along with its 7mm diameter stainless steel rod cooking grates and stainless steel flavorizer bars that will have you competing with “The Outback”, you’ll be tempted to spend the extra money to get this grill

Weber 586002 Q 320 Portable Outdoor Propane Gas Grill Review

Weber Q 320 Portable Gas Grill Review

I have done several reviews on gas grills and have literally read hundreds of consumer based reviews (especially on Amazon) and the Weber Q 320 Portable Gas Grill really stands out as superior. At the time of writing this review I have focused on reviewing the most popular grills so I have reviewed some great grills but I was really surprised to read the type of feedback from this grill. There were even a few reviewers who had grilled 30+ years and one who claims to have grilled over 70 years (he’s close to 90?) and had used all types of grills but this surpassed them all.

I really try to be as thorough as possible and look at the pros AND cons as if it were me making the decision to buy. But it was tough to find some cons on this grill. Ok… having said that, let’s jump in this review and take a look at what kind of grill we have here.
